Social Sailing

What is the 'social sailing' idea? It is simply a way for our members to arrange to meet up to sail models whenever it suits them. The emphasis is on meeting up and sailing models for fun, rather than for racing. This could be at any time of day and on any day of the week. It could even be at short notice depending on the weather forecast. Social sailing is for all kinds of model boats and yachts - racing yachts well as scale sailing models and scale ships etc. Please note that we don’t operate internal combustion (i.c.) powered models at Portishead though.
To join in our social sailing events, either come along to one of the meetings listed on our Calendar, or join our Facebook group for details of other informal meetings at Portishead lake grounds (just click on the 'f' below).
Summer Thursday Evenings and Friday Mornings
The Woodspring Model Sailing Club has a long tradition of meeting up at Portishead Lake grounds on the first Thursday evening of each month from May to September/ October for informal sailing. This is of course weather dependent and we don't usually turn out if it is howling a gale or pouring with rain! Usually we get warm, gentle sunny evenings however and then it can make for a very pleasant evening's sailing. Why not bring your tea and a chair with you?
If sufficient members turn out then we will put out the club feather flags etc. and we can put some buoys out on the lake if people would like to have a course to sail, although we won’t run any formal kind of racing. The normal Thursday evening meeting time is from 4pm to 6pm although members are welcome to come earlier than 4pm or stay later than 6pm if they wish.
Due to the popularity of these meetings in recent years we have added some Friday morning meetings on the third Friday of the summer months as well. Please see the club calendar page for all of this year’s meeting dates. We will use the Facebook group to confirm meetings and to make any late changes or cancellations due to weather etc.
